Meriem Mihammou (born in 1995) in Ouarzazate, located in the south of Morocco, graduated from the Academy of Traditional Arts in 2018. From a young age, she learned the weaving of carpets: know-how transmitted by her mother, herself weaver. The designs and colors of traditional carpets fascinated her from the outset, but with time and maturity coming, the designs of these drawings often made up of limited compositions no longer satisfied her imagination as a modern and curious girl.
Meriem is interested in exploring traditional weaving techniques, while seeking to give them a new reality. Thus, it stands out for its portraits and illusions of woven optics, with extraordinary reliefs and colors. In other words, she managed to break the frozen and age-old codes of Moroccan carpet while respecting tradition, using new technologies to have her own drawings and push the limits of her imagination. Through her art, Meriem engages in a genuine dialogue between the past and the future: traditional Moroccan motifs become the starting point for surprising and innovative works.
